How to Save Wildlife

BEWARE- This blog is quite graphic, and not for the faint of heart!  If you can handle it though, stick with me because if you are desperate to help wildlife but you don’t live close, and spare cash is difficult to come by in your household, you can still pitch in!    If you are nervous this might make you sick, don’t read on, but for those brave souls that can handle a little blood and gore- this simple act of kindness can save countless wild birds and animals.

One of the easiest, and most disgusting ways you can help wildlife is to remove roadkill off the street if you see it. You don’t have to take it anywhere, just get if off the road as far as you can. A few feet will help, but 10-15 feet would be even better!  Don’t pitch it on someone’s porch, but getting roadkill away from the furiously fast cars would be AMAZING!

I know the idea of this is absolutely wretched, but let me explain. Other than baby season, the biggest number of birds of prey we get in, is from being hit by cars while trying to eat something dead in the road.  Here is the simple truth. Birds of prey, like hawks, owls, and falcons miss their prey 75% of the time!  SEVENTY FIVE PERCENT!!!  Can you imagine?

If you try to equate that to a human, imagine being VERY hungry, and going through a drive through 75 times before you finally find one that has some food for you!!!! Do you get it?  These guys are literally ALWAYS HUNGRY because it is so difficult for them to get a meal. Back to the roadkill, what’s easier to catch than something that’s already dead?

Kinda gross, I know, but if you are starving, trust me when I say, your standards for what you will eat, are going to go waaaaay down.

So please, if you can stomach it, drag that roadkill to the side, where a down on his luck hawk will be safe when he finds himself desperate enough to eat a smooshed critter in the streets.  If you find that you absolutely can not handle it, please call animal control, and post guard if you can to keep one of these magnificent birds from getting harmed trying to eat it. I can’t tell you how many times I have had desperate people race down my driveway with a red tail hawk they just watched get hit by the car in front of them.

The simple truth is, despite the best medical help available, most birds or mammals that are hit by a car, will not live.  This is an extremely effective way to help wildlife have a fighting chance, as we continuously encroach on their vanishing wilderness.
